CHOOSING YOUR CABINET HARDWARE

cabinet hardwareBelieve it or not, this step of the kitchen remodel project can be a tad bit overwhelming. Based on the common questions I hear from my clients, I know you’re probably thinking a couple of things right now. “Do I have to use the ones that come with the cabinets?” or “What goes on the doors, handles or knobs?” or “How do I know which color to choose?”

Before I answer, keep this in mind. Think of kitchen cabinet hardware as being the “Jewelry” of the kitchen. Jewelry is worn to complement and complete the outfit. Outfits and kitchens are not all the same and are unique to the individual, correct? The only difference is that cabinet hardware is “Jewelry with a function”. It not only has to complement the kitchen but it has to “fit” the chef.

Cabinets do not come with the hardware already on it. You get to choose that detail to personalize your kitchen even more. There is no rule to follow for having the knobs on the doors or handles on the drawers. Sure that was the “traditional” placement but all knobs are okay too (or visa-versa).

It is obvious that the function of the hardware is to make it easier to open the doors and drawers. One may think this would be a simple task. What is there to think about? You just need something on the front to grab and pull the cabinet open! There are a few things to keep in mind.

There are thousands of styles, shapes, sizes and finishes to choose from. The changes between styles, sizes and shapes can be enough to change the fit from chef to chef. The size of the chefs’ hands and fingers, along with any movement limitations they may have can be the deciding factor from one handle to another. “Is there enough room for everyone to grasp the hardware comfortably and open the cabinet?” “Is it difficult for the chef (or anyone in the home) to grasp small knobs?”

Not only does the hardware have to fit the chef hands, it needs to fit the cabinet style as well. A cabinet style with a lot of detail might not have enough flat space to accommodate a “cup handle” or a “larger handle with a wide bottom”.

What about the finish? Should you choose Brushed Nickel to match your stainless steel appliances? That is not necessarily written in stone. You want to choose a finish that is going to complement the entire kitchen. For example; choosing an Antique Pewter finish will complement stainless steel appliances, sink and faucet and a dark countertop. Remember, it is YOUR kitchen! Make sure it fits your style as well as your lifestyle!
