Lake Retreat
When David and Cameron Marzelli decided to move back east from their home in San Francisco, tearing down their old cottage home on a popular lake in Lakeville became their inspiration for a serene way of life where they could entertain family and friends. They turned to John Scanlon of Scanlon Construction to help make their dream come true. The result is a very open but cozy space where they can entertain and also sit back in a comfy chair to take in the wild life and beautiful water that they call their back yard. Home plans were drawn up. The…
The Fine Line of Happiness
Going through change in our homes can be stressful, especially when it comes to remodeling a kitchen or bath. With the recent graduations of our children from college in the months of May and June, change enters our home as they leave the nest to make their mark in their own lives. With that kind of change comes the itch to do a room or two or three over. It’s almost like we need to shed our skin now that we become alone in our home again. Remodeling any part of the home can be expensive, but there is a…
Friendship
When I think of the word friendship, I can’t help to think back to Lucy and Ethel fighting it out on stage with the song, Friendship. No matter how mad those two zany gals got at each other, they always cried and made up in the end. I guess that is the way all stories on TV or in the movies try to end. I think deep down, no matter how mad we get at a friend, we all hope to end it that same way; as friends should do. Friendships are hard to come by, especially the real good…
A Place You Call Home
Home, home on the range. There’s no place like home. Home is where the heart is. I could go on and on with the many sayings that relate to home. No matter who you are, there is always that one place that we will always call home. My brother Jon always says that home is where your bed is. I have to say that after a week or so when we are on vacation, I can’t wait to get home to my own bed. No matter how comfortable those beds are when I am away, and I have spent many…
Mixing Colors and Materials in Today’s Kitchen
I get asked that question a lot from my client’s on mixing up the colors and materials for their new kitchen design. I can usually answer their question rather quickly after being with them for a half hour or so. You basically have to have a tolerance for change and with the questions we ask in the beginning, a clients personality becomes very clear to me. Conservative personalities tend to not want to mix up colors and materials, where more dominant and extroverted personalities have fun mixing them up. You have to be used to change and if so, the…
Cape Cottage Kitchen
This small cottage in Buttermilk Bay was in need of a kitchen makeover. Homeowner Susan Rooks turned to Wood Palace Kitchens for one that was appropriate for the house. Tim used Homecrest brand cabinets with wood dovetailed drawers. The simple, classic-style doors create a transitional look. Brownstone cabinet glaze on Maple Opaques offers the perfect blend of brown and gray tones, designed to draw out the subtle, sophisticated qualities of today’s modern, neutral color palettes. Countertops are Postform laminate on the main area and Silestone Quartz on the island.
The Work Triangle
The work triangle has been around for as long as I can remember. You are probably wondering what the heck Tim is talking about today. The work triangle goes back to the 1940s when kitchens was much smaller and life were much simpler. The idea behind the work triangle was to have each leg of the triangle no less than 4 feet and up to 9 feet. All three legs were not to exceed 27 feet or be less than 13 feet. The triangle focuses on the sink, fridge, and stove forming an imaginary walking triangle. This was back when…

Food, the Ultimate Memory Drug
It doesn’t matter what age you are, there is always that thought of food or some place you used to eat at that brings that warm feeling through your whole body. You know that feeling I’m talking about; it brings an instant smile to your face. I have that same feeling when a certain song comes on the radio and instantly, I am back at the time in my life when that song first came out. It’s such a great feeling inside when you can remember that feeling of that song or almost taste that pizza or banana split at…
Kids in the Kitchen
Ever since I can remember, I have always been intrigued by what goes on in the kitchen. My mother was a full-blooded Italian who proclaimed she was a lousy Italian because of her dislike of Italian food. She hated garlic and she related it to all Italian foods from how her mother cooked. I often teased her about that and it led to many interesting conversations. My father on the other hand was Russian and Polish, and he expected those kinds of meals on the table at least 2-3 times a week. Not only did my mother hate Italian food,…
