I’ve talked about the Americana Collection before in the newsletter and that it is a collection of cabinetry that is fashionable and affordable and it helps people get a kitchen between the $8,000.00 to $20,000.00. It was specifically designed to help these clients fit into their budget range. The kitchen featured this month fits the collection well.

My clients were a young couple with a small family and had just purchased their first home, a raised ranch. As with anyone who indulges in their first home, budgets need to be tight to afford the things in the home that need to be remodeled. The kitchen was one of those rooms.

They knew that they wanted to stay with a nice, simple look in a slightly off-white cabinet. We chose JSI’s Trenton door style. As with most raised ranches, it’s an L-shaped kitchen with few cabinets. Islands don’t quite fit, so I suggested a peninsula coming off the center wall to give them some more storage and, at the same time, give them a nice bar stool area. There was a cathedral ceiling in the home so we maximized the storage by going a little taller on the cabinet wall height. Six inches makes a big difference for storage in an already tight kitchen. We also built the fridge in with a side panel to give it that built-in look.

When it came to counter tops, she wanted granite, like most clients. Granite is a little lower in price than quartz, so it helps with the budget. The counter top they chose helped us find a cabinet that fit in with their budget as well, and that’s why we chose the JSI brand. It’s a well-built cabinet with an all-plywood construction on interior parts and comes with a wood, dovetailed drawer with self-closing runners and hinges. It’s a great value for the price-sensitive client and has lots of design choices.

All in all, the transformation from the old, oak cabinets that were falling apart to this new, bright kitchen satisfied their needs financially and aesthetically. It’s our job as designers to fill both of those needs and at the same time, help a client get what they dreamed about, at a cost that suits their needs.
