Designing Different Textures Together in the Kitchen
When it comes to remodeling your kitchen, what matters the most is what style (taste) you are trying to achieve. That should be your first thought before you travel through the jungle and myriad of products and textures. As soon as you get overwhelmed, your mind will get confused and shut down. Not a nice place to be when excitement should be the emotion choice.
Once you determine the style you want your space to breathe, product becomes an easy puzzle to connect together. Transitional seems to be the style of choice lately and many styles and colors can happily meld together. White cabinets can marry with the dark stone and can just as easily transcend with the warm earthy stone colors like the kitchen shown. As beautifully as these two come together, it’s the other textures you blend in that bring the space to life.
This is where I like to have fun with tile, hardware, appliances, and lighting materials. Many of our clients haven’t a clue what they would like in the backsplash area. It’s true you can put a 4″ splash matching the counter material on the backsplash, but it’s safe and generic choice. I always recommend a tile back there right down to the counter to bring that other fun texture into the room. With so many different tile materials to pick from, the options are limitless.
Let’s look at the tile splash in this kitchen. The owner had a lot of fun with glass tile. The main area was a subway glass tile and the small bar unit on the center wall was glass strips. They decided to introduce a nice stripe area in the main splash to break up the subway tile some and bring the two areas together. The area is alive because of these decisions and different textures.
I also love the mixture of stainless appliances and the black wrought iron pendants in her room. They naturally come together in such a classic and transitional theme. The kitchens also came together well with the classic oak wood flooring. Wood floors warm up the space and give it a soft and warm feel in the room and on your feet.
Do you have trouble bringing colors and textures together? Don’t fret with all that is available now online. Houzz is a great platform to peruse and dream through. Type in the taste (style) you are looking for and have fun looking through the many pictures available. Once you collect a bunch of photos on your page, you can now bring them and your thoughts to a professional who will ask good questions and listen to help bring your dream space to life. If you are brave enough, you can do it all yourself. Either way, Dream First and watch how it all comes together and falls right into place.
Bon Appetit!
