Understanding the Kitchen Remodel Process

Kitchen remodeling is not rocket science but it is more time consuming than the average person thinks. Home centers have given the illusion over the years that all you need to do is stop by their locations with some quick measurements and have a seat with a kitchen sales person and watch them do their magic on the computer right before your eyes. If you are looking to just fill your kitchen area generically then this will meet your needs. Unfortunately with all of the appliance and cabinet selections, generic will be the farthest word to help accomplish the right results. Let me explain the process.

If you like to cook and entertain, and your kitchen is very important in your family’s life, you want to take the right steps forward to have that dream space. Like I had said earlier, there are many possibilities and selections to choose from. I like to have my clients start with their appliance selections. You can have the most beautiful kitchen but if you don’t have the right appliances in it that screams you, you will not enjoy working in your new space. You will find that there are many cooking options from cook top and ovens to some very high tech stoves. Refrigeration options are abundant also from a regular fridge, low-profile and all the way to custom built in ones. You can start the process going to an appliance dealer or better yet, many distributors now have many working kitchen setups featuring their appliances where you can actually bring food to test them. I advise you to do this if you have the time. If that seems to laborious then find a good appliance store that will listen to you and guide you to your needs instead of just selling you product that they might be getting a spiff on.

After your appliance selections, it’s time to get a design going. If you are looking for a lot of help, choose a good kitchen company with design professionals that are focused on asking good questions and want to listen. This is a key when it comes to getting the right design that fits your needs and lifestyle. Good design never costs anymore than a bad design. A key question to answer is what taste do you want the space to reflect. Transitional is a popular style these days but you might want a farmhouse or country feel to the space. Whichever it is, it is a main factor in creating a design that matches who you are today. Another key thought is to understand how you will be using the space with regards to who cooks in your home. Lot’s of couples both like to cook these days and many cook with their children. If that many do cook together then the design will reflect a space that flows instead of keeping every appliance close.

Once you have a design close to secure, it’s time now to choose the styles and colors for the cabinetry and counter surfaces. Knowing you style comes in very handy for these selections. There are so many styles and colors to choose from these days so being able to narrow this down will provide less stress and help in the time management. There are many surfaces in the counter top world so your designer will help you select the right material that will fit your needs.

I have given you a lot to think about today so I will continue the process next week with the ordering, planning and construction. I’m sure you have been thinking about your project a long time now so going through the right steps and understanding the nuts and bolts will help in having less angst overall. Dream First and everything else will fall right into place!

Bon Appetit!
